  • Idaho group blasts acquittal in puppy-fed-to-turtle case

Shortly afterward, he made his way through the courthouse pews and embraced friends and family.

Mr Crosland could have been jailed six months and fined US$5,000 (S$6,800), but was acquitted after a six-person jury found him not guilty after deliberating for 20 minutes.

"While we are outraged and saddened at the grievous error in judgment by the jury in this case, sadists who perpetuate acts of violence against helpless animals would be foolish to be emboldened by this recent and anomalous miscarriage of justice.", the Idaho Humane Society said in a statement on Facebook Friday night. The school's Science Department Director said that everybody at the school knew that Crosland fed his two reptiles, a snapping turtle and a python, named Monty, living animals since they refused to eat dead meat.

The student said Crosland put the puppy in the turtle's tank, where it swam, before the turtle dragged it to the bottom.

During the trial on Friday the jury heard Crosland say in a recorded interview with investigators that he thought he was doing the right thing because the puppy was sick and likely to die.

Morse focused his questions on the turtle's condition before and during the feeding. That's when Robert Crosland decided he would feed the puppy to one of his classroom animals.

On March 7, 2018, the teen said Crosland told him he had a sick puppy and asked if the teen wanted to take it home.

A counter petition signed by community members, former students and current colleagues expressing support for the long-time science teacher has accumulated roughly 4,000 signatures, the Statesman reported.

Sources quoted said the baby's head was starting to emerge when a nurse came in. He declined to confirm whether the investigation involved a possible sex crime.

"Regardless of whether it was a puppy, an elk or a deer for that matter, it doesn't matter in the eyes of the law", defense attorney Shane Reichart said. Franklin County Magistrate Judge David B. Hooste denied the motion.

Crosland is charged with one count of animal cruelty stemming from an incident in March.

Prosecutors called four students to the stand, all minors. Like the students, both testified of Crosland's devotion to caring for animals in his classroom.

School officials also came to Crosland's defense. Along with the students, these teachers described Crosland as a devoted teacher.

Crosland's son had testified that he gave his father the puppy, and had in turn received it from a farmer.

In opening arguments, the prosecution contended the puppy may not have been sick and may have been able to survive.

Morse argued that the puppy suffered as a result of the feeding, saying it was "flailing around and crashing" around in the turtle tank.
