  • Pentagon chief of staff Kevin Sweeney resigns

Department of Defence chief of staff Rear Adm. Kevin Sweeney resigned on Saturday, following other high-profile Pentagon departures.

Officials have said there is no timetable for the troop departure.

Mr Mattis, who worked with Mr Sweeney when he led the US Central Command, picked him to be his chief of staff in early 2017.

Rear Adm Kevin Sweeney is the third senior Pentagon official to resign after President Trump's Syria announcement.

Sweeney said a statement that he "decided the time is right to return to the private sector".

Packers to interview former Dolphins coach Adam Gase
Gase led the Dolphins to a 10-6 mark in his first season, but went just 13-19 in his final two seasons. Add another coaching candidate to the Green Bay Packers' interview schedule this weekend.

In a terse resignation letter, he said it had been an "an honour to serve" alongside his colleagues in the department, but made no mention of Mr Trump. Pentagon spokesperson Dana White has also stepped down as of last week.

Mattis announced his resignation following Trump's decision to withdraw USA troops from Syria.

No reason was given for Sweeney's departure, which was announced five days after the formal departure of Defense Secretary James Mattis.

While Mattis meant to stay in his role until February, U.S. President Donald Trump announced shortly after that an interim defence secretary would take over the post in January instead.
