The comedy of errors began when he mistakenly omitted one of the four digits.

Dutch astronaut André Kuipers found that out first hand when he accidentally dialed the emergency services number while attempting to place a call to Earth from the International Space Station.

According to Kuipers, it's actually not that hard to contact friends on the Earth from space.

In a recent interview, the now-retired astronaut revealed his humorous blunder, noting that the phone call system from aboard the ISS made it easy to accidentally hit 911.

That's even easier to explain.

Kuipers, who has competed two space missions totaling more than 200 days, said that the next day he received an email from Houston, asking if he had called 911.

Kuipers said he felt a little let down that no one came to space to help.

André Kuipers missed out an essential number when making a call via Houston which ended up connecting with the USA emergency switchboard. "Sometimes people would hang up because they thought I did not say anything, so later on I started to talk as soon as I had dialed the last number", Kuipers said.

He did say, however, there is often a time delay that makes it hard to hold conversations with people on Earth.

Back in 2015, Tim Peak, the first British astronaut also mentioned that he called from space and misdialed.

"I'd like to apologize to the lady I just called by mistake saying 'Hello, is this planet Earth?' - not a prank call... just a wrong number!"
