Avec un tirage exceptionnel de 320.000 exemplaires, le septième roman de l'écrivain français dont l'histoire plonge dans la France rurale s'annonce déjà comme un best-seller.

Il y a quatre ans, la parution de Soumission avait provoqué un véritable raz-de-marée. Publié le jour de l'attaque de Charlie Hebdo, le roman d'anticipation imaginait l'effondrement du monde politique français et prophétisait l'arrivée d'un parti islamiste au pouvoir.

Malgré les scènes pornographiques, le roman de Michel Houellebecq est éminemment romantique.

Goncourt 2010 n'a pas lésiné sur son savoir-faire: une bonne dose de lose et une pincée de désenchantement emballés dans une prose lubrique et crue. Cet ouvrage s'est écoulé à près de 800 000 exemplaires dans le monde francophone et à 520 000 exemplaires en Allemagne.

"Sérotonine est un nouveau chapitre d'une œuvre nécessaire pour comprendre où va le monde.et changer de direction", estime Il Giornale. Michel Houellebecq est "de retour avec un roman qui met en lumière la colère qui couve depuis longtemps dans les provinces françaises", relève The Sunday Times.

Dans son livre, selon le quotidien britannique The Telegraph, l'enfant terrible des lettres françaises ne fait rien de moins que prédire le destin tragique de la civilisation occidentale.

Pour le journal espagnol El Pais, " une des scènes centrales est le blocage d'une autoroute par des agriculteurs en colère contre Paris et l'Union européenne, grande pute, selon les mots du narrateur.
