Court documents say Rooney was charged with public swearing and intoxication.

The former Manchester United and England captain was ordered to pay a small fine of $31 along with around $115 in costs before being released without bail, per reports by abc7 news.

He was then released by authorities on the promise he would attend a future court date following his arrest.

Rooney is serving a two-year United Kingdom drink driving ban stemming from a September 2017 arrest in England.

The soccer player was banned from driving for two years and required to do 100 hours of community service.

Rooney, 33, has been living stateside since he signed a three and half year deal with Major League Soccer Club D.C. United in June last year.

"We understand the media's interest in this matter but we believe this is a private matter for Wayne that D.C. United will handle internally", the team said.

Rooney, who is still banned from driving in the United Kingdom after he was caught drink-driving, was held in a cell in Virginia and fined.

Speaking to Sky News last August upon his arrival to the United States, he said he was relieved about not being a recognisable face in America.

Rooney was granted a farewell match by the Football Association in November against USA.

He was almost three times over the limit when he was pulled over by police at 2.10am on 1 September 2017.

He was arrested by the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority at Dulles International Airport after spending a number of days in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Following his arrest in 2017 he issued a statement, saying: "I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgment in driving while over the legal limit".
