The Canadian government is treating the disappearance of a woman from Quebec and her Italian friend in Burkina Faso as a kidnapping, media reports say.

Tacchetto and Blais met in Canada two years ago and have been travelling since last year, visiting European countries before heading to Africa.

Radio-Canada says the feds haven't ruled out the possibility that Sherbrooke native Edith Blais and her Italian friend, Luca Tacchetto, may have been abducted. They were last heard from on December 15 when Blais posted photos from their trip to Facebook.

Blais and Tacchetto were reportedly on their way to Togo to take part in a reforestation project, but there is no indication they left Burkina Faso.

"We're really anxious because... the communications stopped abruptly and every kind of activity, every trace just completely vanished", Ms Blais' sister, Melanie Blais, told CTV News.

"They never have crossed the border or applied for a visa from Burkina Faso to Togo or Ghana", read a statement posted on a Facebook group created by the woman's family. Since going missing, Bergeron said she's lost a lot of sleep.
