People who had the most volatile incomes between 1990 and 2005 were a little more than twice as likely to develop heart disease and 78 percent more likely to die from any cause during the following decade, compared with people with the most stable incomes, Elfassy and her colleagues found.
Unexpected dips in personal income for young adults have been linked to almost double the risk of death and greater than a 50 percent increase in risk for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack, stroke and heart failure during the following 10 years when compared to people with less variation, according to a studypublished Monday in the journal Circulation.
The study was not able to determine the cause of the association between income volatility and health because it was observational and not created to prove cause and effect. Low income has also been tied to poorer heart health since people with low or unstable incomes tend to have unhealthy lifestyle.
Lead author Assistant Professor Dr Tali Elfassy at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida said in the USA the recent rise in income inequality suggests that a larger proportion of the population faces poverty and economic difficulties.
The study suggested bouts of poverty when young people should be earning more affects heart health more than previously thought and they should be screened to spot the first sign of poor health.
"Another potential limitation of this paper is we haven't really explored mechanisms of action, we are really looking at income and not how this process of income fluctuation translated into health outcomes, we are not looking at the biological mechanism there", Elfassy continued.

And it is likely that there are specific psychosocial and biologic pathways through which income volatility is associated with CVD and premature death.
To explore that topic, the researchers turned to a large-scale ongoing heart study being conducted in four urban areas in the United States: Chicago; Minneapolis; Birmingham, Ala.; and Oakland, Calif. The study participants ranged in age from 23 to 35 at the beginning of the research.
Findings of a new research, however, show that unpredictable changes in one's income can also have devastating impact on a person's physical health. The researchers assessed income volatility based on large swings in income.
The study noted while from young adulthood through midlife, most individuals experience at least some increases in income.
"Income volatility presents a growing public health threat, especially when federal programs, which are meant to help absorb unpredictable income changes, are undergoing continuous changes, and mostly cuts", study lead author Tali Elfassy, an assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in Florida, said in a press release. "They also had less years of education than those who did not have income fluctuation".
