When asked if they were confident that Mrs May had the right deal, 59 per cent disagreed, 21 per cent said they did not know and 18 per cent agreed, the lowest level ever recorded by the poll, which has been monitoring views of her negotiation since 2016.

Corbyn took the opportunity to criticise the prime minister, Theresa May, who was not in attendance.

There has yet to be signs of a significant shift in attitudes among sceptical MPs, despite government efforts to win over opponents of the agreement.

"I think some people within the People's Vote movement seem to think that their goal is to slap the Labour Party around", the shadow foreign secretary said.

A Labour spokesperson said: "If the government is defeated next week, it will clearly have lost the confidence of parliament and there should be a general election".

"A government that can not get its business through the House of Commons is no government at all".

The campaign group Another Europe is Possible has said that unless Labour opposes European Union withdrawal, it will lose millions of votes.

Jeremy Corbyn has come under increasing pressure to throw his weight behind a referendum if Labour can not force an early election.

He will argue: "To break the deadlock, an election is not only the most practical option, it is also the most democratic option". Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.

He faced a backlash from pro-EU campaigners at the end of past year when he confirmed Labour would proceed with Brexit should it win power.

The move comes ahead of a meeting of the Labour Party's International Policy Commission on Wednesday, which is set to discuss Brexit.

The findings of a new survey show that a majority of Britons would vote against Brexit if a new referendum were held today.

In response to Corbyn, the chairman of May's Conservative Party said Labour did not have a plan for Brexit.

A spokesman for May said the government would consider amendments as it usually does, but it was important that ministers were able to deliver Brexit, including in a no-deal scenario.

The visit has prompted speculation Mr Abe has been flown in to bolster global support for the prime minister's Brexit agreement.

She is hoping new proposals on Northern Ireland will change enough MPs' minds to save the deal.
