Norovirus hits Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas

  • The Oasis of the Seas departed from Port Canaveral Fla. on Jan. 6 and is due to return to port on Jan. 13

"We are bringing additional medical staff on board and we're engaging in intensive sanitary procedures to minimize the risk of any further issues", a spokesperson for the cruise line said, adding that affected passengers are being treated with over-the-counter medications by the Oasis' medical team.

Cruise line spokesman Owen Torres told the Associated Press "we think the right thing to do is get everyone home early rather than have guests worry about their health".

Because of the illness, the ship will return to Port Canaveral, Florida, on Saturday, a day earlier than expected.

The rush to return to port wasn't necessarily out of concern for the sick passengers and crew, however - Royal Caribbean was in a hurry to hose down the ship in preparation for another herd of passengers due to depart on Sunday.

According to the CDC, norovirus is a contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea.

Haddap said when they arrived to Jamaica the next day, no one was allowed to leave the ship.

"During this sailing, there has been a small percentage of guests onboard who have experienced gastrointestinal illness, thought to be norovirus".

Thomas also posted a letter that Goran Peterson, Master of the Oasis of the Seas, sent to guest on the cruise before they canceled the cruise altogether.

The Oasis of the Seas, believed to be the largest cruise ship in the world, was forced to cut short a visit to Jamaica yesterday following an outbreak of norovirus on the sprawling vessel, local authorities have revealed.

Oasis Of The Seas has 16 passenger decks and can carry more than 6,000 guests.

"They are held to a standard that, frankly, not everyone else is held to", said Colleen McDaniel, senior executive editor of Cruise Critic, a popular cruise review website.

Cruise ships visiting US Ports must declare to the CDC any outbreak of gastro affecting over 3 per cent of their passengers.

Every year, about a dozen mass norovirus outbreaks are cataloged by the CDC.

"People are still getting sick", he told ABC News. The figure has decreased since 2012, when a novel strain of norovirus emerged, causing a spike in the number of outbreaks. "Anything beats the cold weather in Vermont".
