And under law, Florida's governor can suspend an elected official for issues involving negligence, misfeasance or incompetence.
DeSantis, a Harvard Law School graduate who served as a judge advocate in the Navy and who was sworn into office on Tuesday, hailed Lagoa as "the essence of what a judge should be".
DeSantis said 50-year-old Lagoa has an impeccable judicial background and that her Cuban-American upbringing gives her extra appreciation for the rule of law.
DeSantis also said during the campaign that he would "appoint solid "constitutionalists" to the state Supreme Court and I think that will make a big difference".
Florida Senate President Bill Galvano, R-Bradenton, said in a statement he is confident that Lagoa will fit the judicial temperament that DeSantis laid out in his inaugural address, which called for a more limited role for the Supreme Court. His removal would come less than two months after former Gov. Rick Scott suspended Broward elections supervisor Brenda Snipes over his frustrations with the midterm recount. "And it is the role of judges to interpret our Constitution and statutes as they are written".
Lagoa's appointment is effective immediately. Judge Lagoa received her Juris Doctor from Columbia University in 1992, where she served as an Associate Editor of the Columbia Law Review.
Lagoa, who will replace retiring Justice R. Fred Lewis, is the first Hispanic woman in history to serve on the Florida Supreme Court. In June 2006 Gov. Jeb Bush appointed her to fill the Third DCA vacancy created by the retirement of Judge David Levy.

Barbara Lagoa was born in Miami, Florida in 1967. From 1962 to 1974, it was a processing center for Cuban refugees seeking political asylum from Fidel Castro's regime. The 17-story tower, built in 1925 as a newspaper headquarters, is a symbol of hope, freedom and democracy - like New York's Ellis Island for generations of European immigrants - for many in the Cuban American community.
In her remarks, Lagoa, accompanied by her parents, husband and three daughters, left little doubt that she will fulfill DeSantis' expectations. Lagoa, 51, worked at the Greenberg Traurig and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius law firms in Miami and is a former assistant USA attorney in the Southern District of Florida.
Lagoa attended Florida International University and Columbia University law school. She also handled a significant number of appeals.
