  • Police and a first responders work at the scene where a double-decker city bus struck a transit shelter in Ottawa

On Friday, it became the site of a fatal crash by a double-decker OC Transpo bus, which hit a shelter as it was travelling the 269 route on its way to Bridlewood, which is located in the suburb of Kanata, and just under 20 kilometres away from the station.

The collision happened around 3:50 p.m. Friday.

There were three people killed in total - two on the bus, one on the platform.

Ottawa Hospital's trauma center said it had received nine patients "in critical condition" from the crash.

The driver of the bus was arrested at the scene, Chief Charles Bordeleau of the Ottawa police added at an evening news conference at Ottawa city hall. The driver of the bus was "detained on the scene and will be questioned at our police station", Bordeleau said.

"Like Ontarians from across the province, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the bad tragedy at Westboro station in Ottawa".

The vehicle apparently jumped the curb as it approached the station and plowed along the platform, where the roof of a shelter carved deep into the vehicle's second deck. Another was wheeled on a gurney in obvious distress, wailing loudly enough to be heard on an overpass above.
