Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, said she is running for president in an interview slated to air on CNN's "The Van Jones Show" Saturday evening.

"I have chose to run and will be making a formal announcement within the next week", she said, according to CNN.

"There is one main issue that is central to the rest, and that is the issue of war and peace", Gabbard added.

In 2015, Gabbard, then a vice-chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, was sharply critical of its then-chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for scheduling just six presidential debates during the 2016 primary election cycle. In 2012, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rania Batrice, who was a deputy campaign manager for Bernie Sanders in 2016 and is now a top aide to Gabbard, will be the campaign manager, Batrice says.

Gabbard, a native of American Samoa, was elected to the Hawaii State Legislature in 2002 at the age of 21, the youngest woman to be elected to a state legislature in US history at the time.

Last year, Gabbard came under fire for an impromptu meeting with Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad during what she described as a fact-finding trip to discuss possible solutions to end the war in Syria. "I'm seriously thinking of how I can best be of service to our country", she told Concord Monitor News reporter Paul Steinhauser before meeting with Rockingham County Democrats.

Gabbard has also made headlines for referring to President Trump as "Saudi Arabia's b--", after the president argued for the importance of a strong U.S-Saudi relationship amid calls for him to take a tougher stance on the kingdom in response to the killing of writer Jamal Khashoggi.

"Tulsi Gabbard has an even bigger problem than her lack of experience - it's that she has no base of support", Republican National Committee spokesman Michael Ahrens said. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) announced on New Year's Eve that she was forming a presidential exploratory committee. She met with Assad in 2017.

Thus far only former Maryland Rep. John Delaney has mounted an official presidential bid.
