  • Retail turnover rises 0.4 per cent in November

"The rise of Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Click Frenzy sales have seen households bring forward their Christmas shopping and Boxing Day Sales shopping into November", NAB said in a note on Friday morning.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to most as 57 percent of Australians planned to shop both in-store and online during Black Friday, while a further 37 percent meant to shop Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales exclusively online.

Meanwhile, the optical goods and books segment posted a sales decline of 4.6 per cent, while food retailers' takings fell by 3.7 per cent and supermarkets and hypermarkets were down by 1.4 per cent.

The total sales value of food and beverage services in November was estimated at $845 million, compared to $826 million in the same month in 2017.

"Our combined research with Roy Morgan forecasted a 2.9 percent increase in pre-Christmas sales, as we projected shoppers to spend $51 billion from retail stores across the country from November 9 to December 26, 2018", he said.

Sales previously increased by 0.3% in October, unchanged from the original estimate.

"This is the highest level recorded in the series and continues a pattern of increasing online contributions to total sales in November", the ABS said.

Retailers pulled in S$3.8 billion in all, with online sales making about 6.6 per cent of that.

The Australian dollar effected, challenging $0.7200 on the back of the news.

The retail sales increased 0.2 percent month-on-month on a seasonally adjusted basis in November, compared to a 0.3-percent decrease in October. There were falls in the Northern Territory (-0.9 per cent), and Tasmania (-0.2 per cent).

"Household goods retailing (1.2 per cent) led the rise" said Ben Faulkner, Acting Director of Quarterly Economy Wide Surveys, "while there was also a notable rise for clothing, footwear and personal accessories retailing (1.5 per cent)".

Compared to the same period in 2017, sales of food and beverage services increased 2.4 per cent in November previous year.

Australian government bonds traded flat during Asian session Friday as investors remain sidelined in quiet trading session despite better-than-expected November retail sales data.

The reversal in non-food sales in 2017 was even more acute with November's 2.1% gain followed up by a 1.4% plunge in December.
