An Afghan wedding singer has become famous at home and on social media for his resemblance to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Unless you're a Trump supporter, because the two have had a few run-ins during their time at the helm of their respective countries, or a fan of the conventional handshake.

Now, some people who watched are convinced Abdul Salam Maftoon is a doppelgänger for the world-famous politician and Maftoon, a 29-year-old singer reportedly from the remote region of Badakhshan in northeast Afghanistan, has a new claim to fame entirely separate from his abilities to entertain. Since one of the show's judges pointed out his similarity to the Canadian leader, Maftoon, of northeastern Afghanistan, has been going viral online.

But unlike the world's Trudeau fangirls, Maftoon had never heard of the well-coiffed prime minister.

"People have forgotten my name and now they just call me 'Justin Trudeau, '" Maftoon said. "I'd love to see our Trudeau win this year's Afghan Star". "The resemblance has boosted my chances of winning the competition by 50 per cent".

On numerous videos uploaded by Tolo TV's Afghan Star YouTube channel, many were stunned to see the striking resemblance.

Talent show judge Qais Ulfat, an Afghan-born Canadian musician, was one of the first to notice the resemblance.

So far, Mr Maftoon's repertoire of romantic folk songs, which he sings in both of Afghanistan's official languages Dari and Pashto, and his looks have impressed viewers, whose votes decide which performer is kicked off the show each week.

"He looks like my prime minister", Ulfat said. He is down to the last eight contestants and is set to compete in the March 21 final.

"We will see what happens".
