  • Huawei Founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei speaks during a session of the World Economic Forum annual meeting

Huawei is facing heightened scrutiny as phone carriers prepare to roll out fifth-generation technology in which the company is a leading competitor.

In a rare media appearance Huawei's founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei has denied his company would assist Chinese state espionage and praised President Donald Trump.

Ren pushed back on accusations levied by some foreign governments, led by the United States, that Huawei poses a national security threat due in part to his close relationship with the Chinese Communist Party.

No evidence has been produced publicly and Huawei has repeatedly denied the accusations, but several Western countries have restricted Huawei's access to their markets.

"We would definitely say no to such a request", Ren said when asked how the company would respond to a government demand for confidential information about a foreign buyer of its telecom technology.

Over the past year the accusations have intensified, compounded by his daughter's arrest as well as the blocking or limiting of Huawei gear in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand and other countries.

He also called Donald Trump "a great president" and said he'll take a wait-and-see approach as to whether the USA leader will intervene on behalf of Huawei finance chief Meng Wanzhou.

'Having played 15 years in the Premier League and won every single trophy possible, I feel I have achieved everything I set out to achieve.

"Huawei firmly stands on the side of customers when it comes to cyber security and privacy", Ren said. Meng - Ren's eldest daughter - is in Canada facing extradition to the USA on allegations of helping defraud banks to avoid sanctions on Iran.

What just happened? Huawei's reclusive founder, Ren Zhengfei, has given his first foreign media interview in four years.

Ren cited comments by Chinese government spokespeople who rejected suggestions, including by a vice president of the European Union, that Huawei and other vendors might be required to install secret "backdoors" to facilitate eavesdropping under a law enacted previous year that requires them to cooperate with intelligence agencies.

"I love my country, I support the Communist Party".

Huawei's USA market evaporated in 2012 after a congressional panel said the company and its smaller Chinese rival, ZTE Corp., were security risks and urged phone companies to avoid them.

"I don't see close connection between my personal political belief and our business actions we are going to take as a business entity", he said.

Ren cited comments by Chinese government spokespeople who rejected suggestions, including by a vice president of the European Union, that Chinese vendors might be required to install secret "backdoors" to facilitate eavesdropping under a law enacted previous year that requires them to cooperate with intelligence agencies. He dares to massively cut tax, which will benefit the business. And last week, a director of sales for Huawei was arrested in Poland for allegedly spying on behalf of China. The employee in Poland was subsequently fired by Huawei, which said the individual had brought the company into disrepute. "But I will not do anything to harm the world", Ren said at the roundtable. "As long as we can feed our employees, I believe there will always be a future for Huawei". But Reuters uncovered in documents earlier in January that show Huawei is closely linked to both firms.
