However, many claim that the use of the real-life footage within the fictional narratives manages to trivialize and sensationalize the tragedy at the same time.

At least two dramas now on Netflix's Canadian platform, including "Bird Box", briefly use actual footage of the 2013 derailment.

The offending footage has been used in another Netflix production, the newly-released Bird Box movie starring Sandra Bullock.

Despite many people speaking out about the footage, including the mayor of Lac-Mégantic, the town where the event occurred, Netflix has chose to not do anything about it.

On July 6, 2013, the runaway train derailed in the small Quebec town, causing its shipment of millions of gallons of oil to catch fire, killing 47 people and decimating the city's downtown.

The explosion and subsequent fire caused 47 deaths and destroyed almost half the downtown area, including 30 buildings.

Early on in the hugely popular monster flick Bird Box, Sandra Bullock's character Malorie and her sister Jessica-played by Sarah Paulson-watch a few brief clips of the news. The show's executive producer, Carrie Mudd, apologised and said the footage had been acquired from an agency called Pond 5.

The mayor of Lac-Megantic, Julie Morin, has decried the use of the footage in an interview with The Canadian Press, calling it "a lack of respect". "You can be sure we are going to follow up on this, and our citizens are on our side". However, as BuzzFeed News noted, Netflix was accused earlier this month of using footage from another fatal train crash that occurred in Belgium in 2010 in its film Death Note. "I don't know anyone who died in Lac-Mégantic".

Fortune has contacted Netflix for comment.

According to North Shore News, the footage was first spotted by high school ethics teacher Guillaume Bouchard while he was watching Season 3 of Netflix original sci-fi series Travelers. Mudd said in a separate statement that Peacock Alley Entertainment had "no intention to dishonour the tragic events of 2013". "We are already working to replace the footage in the show".
