Musk and Shotwell acknowledged that the broad restructuring at SpaceX meant the company would have to lay off some employees with whom they'd rather not part ways.

Gwynne Shotwell, the President and COO of SpaceX recently in a mail wrote that SpaceX should become a leaner firm. That would be the first mission operating a SpaceX Falcon Heavy launcher carrying a human-crewed Dragon capsule, to be launched in February.

SpaceX fired about 10 percent of its workforce. Space exploration company SpaceX announced on Friday that it will lay off more than 10 percent of its staff as it pursues ambitious projects. In December, the Wall Street Journal detailed that SpaceX was raising $500 million, taking its valuation to $30.5 billion.

According to a WARN notice filed with the state of California on January 11th, the company let go of 577 employees at its Hawthorne facility alone, where SpaceX is focused on developing its re-usable Raptor engines to power its massive rockets. "Either of these developments, even when attempted separately, have bankrupted other organizations", a company spokesman told Reuters in an email. It is expected that this system will enable advanced satellite broadband services as well as aircraft surveillance and tracking. We are grateful for everything they have accomplished and their commitment to SpaceX's mission. SpaceX Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell said during a TED Talk previous year that she expects the satellite constellation to cost about $10 billion to deploy.

Musk said that while the image displayed is of the rocket for suborbital tests (meaning the rocket will not complete a revolution in the outer space), the orbital version (when the rocket will be deployed at a trajectory where it remains in one orbit) is taller and has thicker skins.

Days after Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully deployed 10 Iridium communication satellite into the lower-Earth orbit, the space exploration company has announced that it is slimming down 10 per cent of its workforce consisting of almost 6,000 employees.

SpaceX is also developing a constellation of satellites that could one day beam high-speed internet down to the Earth.

SpaceX earns most of its revenue by launching private and national security satellites, on top of two contracts it has with NASA.
