Despite Carr's statement, BuzzFeedsaid Friday it was standing by its report and trying to figure out which aspects of it were deemed inaccurate by Mueller's team.
Through a spokesperson, Mueller said that BuzzFeed News' report alleging specific details of how the special counsel learned that Donald Trump allegedly ordered his former attorney Michael Cohen to lie to Congress was "not accurate".
The story landed like a thunderclap in Washington, where prominent Democrats are vowing to get to the bottom of it.
Democrats in Congress had pledged to investigate the report to see if the president had committed an impeachable felony.
Cohen, who once said he was so loyal to Trump that he would " take a bullet" for him, is scheduled to begin a three-year prison sentence in March after pleading guilty to charges including campaign finance violations, tax evasion and lying to Congress.
Trump weighed in Friday night on Twitter, criticizing BuzzFeed.
BuzzFeed reported that President Donald Trump directly instructed his former attorney, Michael Cohen, to lie to Congress about his plans to build a Trump Tower property in Moscow, citing two anonymous "federal law enforcement officials" as sources that the president had suborned perjury - which, being an actual crime, triggered talk of impeachment "walls closing in" among the anti-Trump "Resistance". Trump said on Twitter of Cohen, who was convicted a year ago of fraud and perjury.
He called Cohen a "liar" and a "thief" and said the president had no knowledge of any payment.
A day after the report published, Mueller's office disputed it as "not accurate". "In 70 hours' time, he could have said anything, because he was trying to please the investigators in order to avoid jail time", Gingrich argued.
House intelligence committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., both said they would probe BuzzFeed's account.
In a statement earlier Friday, Peter Mirijanian, a spokesperson for Abbe Lowell, ethics counsel for Ivanka Trump, said the Trump Organization considered projects around the world "and nothing was different or wrong about one that might be in Russian Federation", but distanced the president's eldest daughter from the matter. It also said that Mueller's office had corroborating evidence through witness interviews and internal communications from the Trump Organization.
The special counsel is investigating alleged Russian interference in the United States presidential election and whether Trump campaign figures were complicit - a claim repeatedly denied by Mr Trump. Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar asked, referring to an unsolicited memo Barr wrote the Justice Department about the Mueller investigation.
A Senate Democrat, Chris Murphy of CT, tweeted that "we need to know this ASAP" if Mueller does have multiple sources confirming that Trump directed Cohen to lie.
Fox News investigative reporter Sara Carter tweeted: "I did not believe this story from the beginning- they never saw the documents, had no corroboration from SC office and now they've been either played by sources or wrote outright lies".
Cohen evidently pocketed the balance of the $50,000 he sought from Trump: "If one thing has been established, it's that Michael Cohen is completely untrustworthy", Giuliani told the Journal.
