  • 2018 was the fourth-hottest year on record

(WASHINGTON D.C.)- past year was the fourth warmest since 1880, according to independent analyses by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

They also report that during 2018 the global temperature was 0.83 Celsius degrees above the 20th century average and that ninth of the 10 warmest years occurred since 2005.

According to NOAA, 2016 was the warmest year on record, followed by 2015 and 2017 in second and third place.

"We're no longer talking about a situation where global warming is something in the future", said Gavin A. Schmidt, director of the Goddard Institute for Space Studies, the NASA group that conducted the analysis.

Specifically, NASA said global temperatures in 2018 were 1.5 degrees Fahrenheit above the average from 1951 to 1980. The long-term trends are extremely robust.

That warming is driven by the amount of greenhouse gases humans have introduced into the atmosphere, particularly in the least 100 years, Schmidt said.

AAA: Cold weather can cut electric vehicle range by 40 per cent
The driving range of electric cars is not only impacted in cold climates, but in extremely hot environments too. And when it's negative six outside, the driver is likely to lean pretty heavily on the climate control.

The year just past also saw 14 weather and climate related disasters with losses of $1 billion or more, which totaled about $91 billion in damages. Deathly record lows are real in the United States of America, but don't be fooled by the cooling that we have been witnessing, global warming is real also.

NOAA and NASA each analyze temperature measurements from thousands of sites around the world, including weather stations on land and ships and buoys spread across the world's oceans.

The records also show that the annual temperature of the Old Continent increased at an average rate of 0.12 Celsius degrees per decade since 1910, although it has nearly quadrupled to 0.43 Celsius since 1981. Lower than normal temperatures are shown in blue. Such cold weather has made it really hard for many to believe that global warming is real. The World Meteorological Organization? and the United Kingdom's Met Office? also found that 2018 was among the top four warmest years.

In fact, 2018 was the wettest year in the last 35 years.

But the USA did get soaked in 2018, says Deke Arndt, a climate scientist with NOAA.

Results of the year's global temperature ranking are normally announced in January, but due to the effects of the government shutdown, federal scientists research for the analysis were postponed.
