Unemployment in the region was 6 per cent in January, Statistics Canada said on Friday, down from 6.2 per cent the month before.

The same factors led Ontario's monthly jobless rate to climb to 5.7 per cent, even with 41,000 new jobs, many of those positions going to youth in service industries. Canada's employment rate, participation rate and unemployment rate were all higher than that of the United States, adjusting for US-based employment concepts.

Most of the jobs were in the private sector, which recorded the biggest month-to-month increase since the agency started collecting the data point in 1976.

The central bank stayed on the sidelines last month, after five hikes since July 2017, and most analysts expect it to take no action.

Year-over-year, the unemployment rate is up from January 2018 when it sat at 3.8%, and when 37,700 people were reported to be employed in a labour force of 39,200.

Wages for permanent employees accelerated to 1.8 per cent in January from 1.5 per cent in December, and overall wage growth ran steady at two per cent.

That six-percentage point decline was about three times faster than that of Canada as a whole. "On a trend-cycle basis, self-employment has levelled off in recent months", said StatsCan. "Over the same period, there was little change in the number of self-employed workers".

The jobs data is one of the last major indicators ahead of the March 6 rate decision.

According to BC Stats, the province saw job gains in agriculture, up 1,100 jobs, and utilities, up 500 jobs. The unemployment rate did rise, but only because of an increase in the participation rate.
