Insects could be wiped out within a century - scientists

Insects could completely disappear from the Earth within 100 years if they continue to decline at current rates, The Guardian notes: "More than 40% of insect species are declining and a third are endangered, the analysis found".

The projections are based on the downward trajectory of the world's insect mass, which is thought to be falling by 2.5% per year.

Birds, lizards and even plants pollinated by insects could be wiped out, the researchers warn - saying that extinction rates among insects are eight times higher than among mammals, birds and reptiles.

The warning was issued in a global review of insect declines, in which the authors called for a dramatic rethinking of agricultural practices and better strategies for cleaning polluted waters.

Francisco Sánchez-Bayo of the University of Sydney said, 'If insect species losses can not be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet's ecosystems and for the survival of mankind.

In ten years you will have a quarter less, in 50 years only half left and in 100 years you will have none.

Wrote the researchers: "The trends confirm that the sixth major extinction event is profoundly impacting life forms on our planet".

'The repercussions this will have for the planet's ecosystems are catastrophic to say the least'.
