  • Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel al Jubeir says Saudi authorities do not know the location of slain dissident Jamal Khashoggi

"It was a mistake".

A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to Mr. Trump in October calling for an investigation and a decision on sanctions under the global Magnitsky Human Rights Act, which is aimed at punishing foreign government officials for human rights violations.

He continued: "We have said we will investigate".

Michael McCaul, a Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said on Saturday that "everyone involved in this gruesome crime must be identified and held accountable".

US intelligence agencies have concluded that the crown prince at least had knowledge of the plot.

"The death of Jamal Khashoggi was a massive tragedy", he said. "And the whole country is shocked by this".

"Seeing as the Trump administration has no intention of insisting on full accountability for Mr. Khashoggi's murderers, it is time for Congress to step in and impose real consequences to fundamentally re-examine our relationship with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia and with the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen", Mr. Menendez said in a statement.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist who wrote critically about Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was killed inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

Questioned why those in custody couldn't tell them where the body was, Jubeir responded: "We are still investigating". "Don't judge us before the process is complete".

He echoed the United Nations blame for the Houthis, vowing that Saudi Arabia would "absolutely" allow passage of food through ports in Yemen.

On Friday, The New York Times said the Central Intelligence Agency had intercepted communications of the crown prince telling a top aide in 2017 that he would go after Khashoggi "with a bullet" if the journalist did not return to Saudi Arabia.

Mr. Al Jubeir called US criticism of Saudi leadership "a red line".

"I'm not going to comment on reports based on anonymous sources", he said.

Al-Jubeir claimed Saudi investigators still don't know the location of Khashoggi's body.

Turkey says he was killed by a team of 15 Saudis who strangled him at the mission, and media reports have said his body was cut up and dissolved in acid.

"We have now a number of possibilities and we're asking them what they did with the body, and I think this investigation is ongoing, and I would expect that eventually we will find the truth", he said.
