Second Warmest Year Ever Recorded In Arizona

  • 2018 was one of the hottest years on record — and this year could be even hotter

As last year's horrifying IPCC report showed, the only way to avoid the worst consequences of climate change is to prevent these temperatures from rising to be two degrees celsius higher than pre-industrial averages.

Global temperatures averaged 1.49 degrees Fahrenheit above the 1951-1980 average according to NASA data, while NOAA showed 1.42F above the 1901-2000 average.

According to a study from the Goddard Institute for Space Studies at NASA, last year saw the Earth's fourth-highest global surface temperatures when compared to almost 138 years of records.

Since the 1880s, the average global surface temperature has risen about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1 degree Celsius). This, according to scientists, is a result of the continuing warming trend caused by the excess emission of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere.

NASA's temperature analyses came from 6,300 weather stations, ship and buoy-based observations of sea surface temperatures, and temperature measurements from Antarctic research stations. That would be warmer than the last four years. "That means kids graduating from high school have only known a world of record-breaking temperatures".

While 2018 was slightly cooler than the three prior years, Earth still had its fourth-warmest year since scientists began keeping records in 1880, the federal agencies said.

"According to our calculations, the Gulf of Mexico region had it's third warmest year on-record this year", said Deke Arndt, chief of the monitoring section of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.

On Wednesday, NOAA also issued their own analysis of the economic impact of global warming.

The hottest year was 2016, and the top five years are the years starting from 2014.

Due to the dynamic character of global weather patterns, not every place of the Earth experiences the same levels of warming.

NASA also found that the greatest warming trend overall was in the Arctic region, which has seen the continual loss of sea ice in recent years.

The records also show that the annual temperature of the Old Continent increased at an average rate of 0.12 Celsius degrees per decade since 1910, although it has nearly quadrupled to 0.43 Celsius since 1981.

Past year was also the third wettest on record in the US. Taalas said that the deadly cold snap was entirely consistent with the effects of manmade climate change, including the warming of the poles.

The 2018 global temperature reports were originally scheduled for release in mid-January, but they were delayed because the 35-day partial government shutdown prevented government scientists from finalizing their calculations.
