With large parts of the United States hit by a deep freeze last week, some took up the challenge to throw water in the air and watch it instantly turn into frozen vapour. A spokesperson said they had injuries to their feet, arms, hands and face.

He added it was not just the people throwing the water who are getting hurt. The Loyola University wasn't the lone medical facility in the MidWest to accept "Boiling Water" dimwits. Hospitals, however, said the viral challenge is sending people to the emergency room. When it's 20 below outside, the devil comes in many shapes and sizes.

Loyola burn surgeon Dr Arthur Sanford warned people to not perform the challenge, noting "there is no safe way to do it". Hennepin Healthcare in Minneapolis also had a couple of people who were hospitalized as a result of the challenge gone wrong in recent weeks.

Whitley said they also saw face scald injuries in people who threw boiling water in the air but the wind blew back the hot water on them. Almost three-quarters of the population of the United States experienced temperatures at or below freezing; in Chicago temperatures plunged to minus 21.

A breakdown in the polar vortex, which normally circulates strong winds around the northern pole, sent that icy blast southward in the past couple of weeks.

Having any bare skin in weather that cold is its own problem, because it poses a risk of frostbite.

The combination of hot water and cold air pushes the water nearly instantly through the three states of matter: gas, liquid, solid.

The shocking craze sweeping the internet sees the water freeze before it hits the ground and turns into something that resembles a candy floss cloud.

Treatment depends on how severe the burn, he said.

Chicago's Cook County Health chairman of emergency medicine Jeff Schaider advised the public not to try the boiling water challenge. But don't try it yourself.

So there you have it. Throwing boiling water over your head is a bad idea.
