A new report found that 40% of insect species are declining, with a third endangered, according to a global scientific review of research.

But where many die, others are expected to thrive, as "plagues of pests" may arise out of the loss of butterflies, bees, and dung beetles.

Due to the high level off species loss, Earth is considered to have entered into its sixth mass extinction event in half-a-billion years as conservationists warn that more needs to be done to protect our environmental systems.

As the Australian researcher Francisco Sánchez-Bayo told the newspaper: "If insect species losses can not be halted, this will have catastrophic consequences for both the planet's ecosystems and for the survival of mankind".

Added CNN: 'Some 80% of wild plants use insects for pollination while 60% of birds rely on insects as a food source, according to the study. Many insects feed on dead animals and fallen trees, thereby recycling nutrients back into the soil.

Scientists believe that intensive agriculture and the heavy use of pesticides are the main drivers of the massive insect loss which may finally lead to many birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish that eat insects starving to death.

Two-fifths of the world's insect species may disappear over the next few decades, and we could be looking at a world without any insects at all within a century.

The study included a wide range of reports to paint the clearest picture of how insect populations are faring worldwide.

"Thirdly, we have biological factors, such as invasive species and pathogens; and fourthly, we have climate change, particularly in tropical areas where it is known to have a big impact". "The repercussions this will have for the planet's ecosystems are catastrophic to say the least".
