Speaking after a dinner with Brexit Secretary Steve Barclay on Monday night, European Union negotiator Michel Barnier said the talks had been "constructive", but added it was "clear from our side we're not going to reopen the withdrawal agreement, but we will continue our discussions in the coming days".

Mr Barclay met a group of Tory MPs on Monday, ahead of his trip to Brussels, who are working on possible alternatives to the backstop.

"I think that you would need to have a time limit".

"I don't think that there is any mileage for the Prime Minister or the Government in trying to do a deal with Labour because they will just try to trap Theresa May", he said at a launch event at Westminster.

May will promise lawmakers a second opportunity to influence the Brexit talks later in the month in a bid to stave off any rebellion from within her own party by those who fear Britain could end up leaving without a deal.

She insisted her deal already met numerous conditions he had set.

It also recognises the development of the UK's independent trade policy, she added.

"If you are going to stay in the customs union and the single market and you are going to have people around the table in Brussels, there's a name for that".

Mrs May does not agree, and wrote: "I am not clear why you believe it would be preferable to seek a say in future European Union trade deals rather than the ability to strike our own deals?"

"We never pushed for Brexit, we never demanded Brexit", Bettel said.

It also follows an exchange of letters between Mrs May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Treasury Chief Secretary Liz Truss refused to rule out resigning if Mrs May backed a customs union.

She told Sky News: "I absolutely do not think that should be our policy".

She did not reject any of his conditions outright in her reply.

He said "there needs to be a day when Parliament says that's it, enough is enough".

Ministers have conceded in private meetings with business leaders that they will not be able to replace all of the deals before the Brexit deadline on 29 March, meaning a large proportion of United Kingdom exports could shift to World Trade Organization rules.

This is despite Mr Corbyn repeatedly saying there should be a general election if Mrs May can not get a deal through Parliament.

He said: "The Government will commit that if the meaningful vote, in other words the deal coming back, has not happened by 27 February then we would allow a further motion - votable in Parliament - to take place to give that sense of assurance as to the process moving forward as well in parallel".

Communities Secretary James Brokenshire said Sunday that parliament would get another chance to pass judgment on May's Brexit plan "by no later than February 27".

Barnier told a news conference in Luxembourg that time was "extremely short" to conclude a deal before Britain is due to leave the bloc on March 29.
