  • The FBI released these portraits drawn by confessed serial killer Samuel Little a man who claims he's murdered more than 90 people. He claims the portraits are of his victims.

A senior citizen who may be one of the most prolific serial killers in America painstakingly sketched women believed to be his victims - and now authorities are hoping the creepy drawings could lead to some answers.

The FBI released 16 of Little's portraits, all of which were drawn from memory, on Tuesday. DNA acquired during his detention connected him to three murders in the 1980s.

Officers are said to be desperately scouring old case files and photographs to try and identify the Jane Does, but matching them up is proving to be a hard task.

Little has told investigators he killed two other women in Texas - one whose body he dumped somewhere outside Wichita Falls in 1976 or 1977, and another he said he killed in Houston, either between 1976 and 1979 or in 1993.

Police have confirmed 36 cases so far, a tally that puts Little among the deadliest serial killers, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

78-year-old Samuel Little says he killed 94 women from 1970 to 2005. Without a gunshot or knife wound, numerous deaths were blamed on overdoses or accidents and murder investigations were never opened. "It's the least we can do", Buchwald added.

Little targeted marginalized and vulnerable women who were often involved in prostitution or addicted to drugs, Christina Palazzolo, a crime analyst for the FBI's Violent Criminal Apprehension Program wrote in a November FBI article.

Some, however, display more specific detailing that may later prove to be crucial fragments of recollection: one, listed as "Mary", has a blue and white striped headband holding her hair back.

Another has purple streaks through her curled hair.

Another is of a black woman between 23 and 25 years old with bright red lipstick and red earrings.

One of the victims was from Prince George County, Maryland, one in West Memphis, Arkansas, and the third was from Pascagoula, Missouri. He is now serving three life sentences in the strangulation deaths of three women in California.

They're now investigating other possible links to slayings in 36 different cities, across 16 different states.

Little was caught after being arrested on a drugs charge in a homeless shelter in Kentucky, and extradited to California in 2012.

Sentenced to life in prison, Little was transferred to Texas in connection with the investigation into another murder.

Now in poor health, Little is in custody in California, according to Bland.
