Half of all American children with a mental health condition are not getting the necessary treatment, according to a new study released on Monday.
The researchers analyzed data from the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health, a nationwide survey administered to parents of children and teens. There were cases of depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), bipolar disorder, eating disorders, body dysmorphic disorders etc.
Peterson found that, based on the nationally representative survey and estimates, about 7.7 million US children, or about 16.5%, have at least one of those disorders. They also pose the greatest risk for long-term problems if not treated early, says study senior author Mark D. Peterson, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In Hawaii, for instance, 7.6% of youngsters had one of many conditions, in contrast with 27.2% in Maine.
