House lawmakers are set to vote on a on a proposed bill to end US involvement in the proxy war in Yemen.
The resolution - which passed by a 248 to 177 vote - has garnered bipartisan support on Capitol Hill in part because many lawmakers are angry at the White House for refusing to issue a report on whether the Saudi royal family was responsible for the gruesome murder of Washington Post journalist Jamal Khashogghi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul last October.
The White House could use a veto after the House of Representatives voted on a resolution to end U.S. military involvement in Yemen on Wednesday. The Senate is also expected to vote on the resolution within 30 days.
A previous version of the resolution passed the Senate by 56-41 in December. If he did veto the Yemen resolution, it's unclear whether lawmakers would have enough support to override him. While there are no official numbers, the United States is known to have troops on the ground in the war-torn country, mainly to fight Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
The resolution, however, includes an amendment that allows U.S. intelligence sharing with Saudi Arabia despite it ending its military role.
The administration - and many of Trump's fellow Republicans in Congress - said the resolution was inappropriate because US forces had provided aircraft refueling and other support in the Yemen conflict, not combat troops.
If approved by the Senate, the resolution will still need Mr Trump's signature to become law.
Only 18 of Trump's fellow Republicans in the House joined 230 Democrats in supporting the resolution seeking to stop the USA military from any hostilities in or affecting Yemen, including refueling aircraft conducting missions in the Yemen civil war, without authorization from Congress. It also said the measure would harm relationships in the region and hurt the us ability to prevent the spread of violent extremism.
Concerning the bill's potential impact on Yemen, Mr Heras argued that "this resolution will accomplish nothing to end hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, and in fact, it may backfire".
Administration officials are pushing for the U.S.to continue supporting the Saudi-led coalition in order to contain the spread of Iranian influence in Yemen.
