Michael Frolik and Austin Czarnik scored 1:33 apart to put the Flames ahead 3-1 at 3:12 of the second period.

"We'd like to get dialed up a bit better and a little more consistent across the board, and that's what we'll strive towards coming to the finishing line here".

Malkin then scored twice in a span of 2:31 to give him four goals in two games since serving a one-game suspension for a stick-swinging incident.

Malkin has points in seven consecutive games that he has played over the past month, interrupted by missing five games with an upper-body injury and the one game because of suspension.

"He tends to be a guy who builds confidence when he scores, and so I think that bodes well for us and for him", Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said.

Malkin scored a power-play goal off the rush at 5:42 of the third and another power-play goal at 14:41 to close it to 5-4. But Pittsburgh couldn't get the equalizer past goalie Mike Smith, who made 34 saves to win for the first time since January 13.

The Flames are now 34-16-7 and are in first place in the Pacific Division.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have activated defenseman Justin Schultz off injured reserve. But the Penguins allowed at least five goals for the seventh time over their past 17 games and are 7-9-1 in that time. They are tied with the San Jose Sharks for first in the Western Conference.

But in the locker room after Saturday's win, one thing was clear: Despite all the hand-wringing in the media and among fans during their losing skid, the Flames themselves weren't overly concerned.

Malkin cut it to 5-3 at 5:42 of the third period with his first goal since January 11, when he scored against the Anaheim Ducks. Each of those was assisted by Crosby, but Crosby could not convert two prime scoring chances in the final minute.

"We didn't love our trip, to be honest with you", said Flames head coach Bill Peters.

"We made it a little harder than we would've liked by putting them on the power play".

Before he was relieved by Casey DeSmith for the start of the third period, the Penguins' Matt Murray allowed five goals on 24 shots, though his performance was at least in part attributable to shoddy defense and bad luck.

The puck on the goal credited to Mangiapane - the second of his career - hit at least three sticks after it was shot from the left point by Oliver Kylington.

The goal that gave the Flames the lead for good 1:29 into the second period was a loose puck swatted in when no Penguins player picked up Frolik after Murray had stopped Matthew Tkachuk. After the Penguins turned the puck over in the neutral zone, Czarnik made it 3-1 with a knuckling shot from the top of the left circle.

Travis Hamonic extended the lead to 4-2 on a wrist shot that went in off Guentzel's stick at 16:02 of the second.

Crosby closed it to 3-2 with his 25th goal, during a power play, at 6:52 of the second with a roofed severe-angle shot. "Obviously, it's a good team over there". "But we got points in three of the four games and finished.500". Phil Kessel became the 17th United States-born player to reach 800 National Hockey League points with the secondary assist on Crosby's goal.
