The Last Blockbuster Video on Earth is Now in Bend, Oregon

The Blockbuster store in a city near central OR became the last one in the US previous year. "If you'd asked me 14 years ago, there's no way I'd thought we'd be the last one", Sandi Harding, the general manager of the OR store, told Engadget at the time.

Now, earning the title of the last one on the planet "is not hurting us", Harding said. As she said, classic older titles are the store's "bread and butter". "Netflix and Amazon don't have everything, either".

The remaining franchised stores kept closing until the Bend Blockbuster was the last one. In fact, it will probably be good for business and attract more nostalgia-seeking visitors.

At its prime in the early 2000s, Blockbuster boasted more than 9,000 stores across the nation.

The store rents movie on DVD and Blu-ray as well as video games. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2010 and was bought by Dish Network. Soon after, Blockbuster began closing its doors, though some franchise locations tried to stick it out.

The final Bend location is already becoming a sort of tourist attraction, reports the NYT. "We're proud to still be open", she said.
