Freyberg High School principal Peter Brooks said a group of 15 students from the student council and the environment committee asked him if they could take a petition to the council on Friday. And now, teenagers around the world are channelling their anger at the climate crisis and demanding politicians tackle global warming.

The strikers will meet at Railway Park at 10am this Friday, March 15, and walk to Main Beach to hear speeches from local students and non-amplified musical items from young artists.

"We applaud the strong leadership shown by young people in advocating for a safe and healthy future for everyone".

According to registration counts from FridaysForFuture.org, which is the network hub for the student climate strike movement, there are over 1000 actions planned in 89 different countries, at the time of writing.

Hawke's Bay students will join their counterparts from around the country in striking for urgent action on climate change on Friday.

She said that it is "kind of sad" that students have to take it upon themselves to push for policy changes "to ensure that our future is protected".

She says the world is essentially in meltdown, and the impact of a few hours off school pales in comparison to the likely impact of climate change on the lives of today's children.

"So think about how many more long-term net jobs will be created by transitioning to a 100 percent renewable economy", she said. As many of us are not yet of voting age, we can often feel powerless in face of a government that will not listen to us. We want our students to be politically aware and civically engaged.

The students said that they want the Government to ensure that all fossil fuels are left in the ground and called for a ban on new fossil fuel infrastructure. I hope that in the next federal election, we see someone elected that is able to accurately represent the electorate's values and wishes.
