  • Onzo have pulled out of the New Zealand e-scooter rat-race to focus on their bike ride-sharing scheme

Auckland Transport said the scooters will be restricted to 15km/h on Queen Street and in the Wynyard Quarter and Viaduct Basin areas.

Wave was granted a licence by Auckland Council in October to operate 1000 scooters, starting with an initial 500.

It will recall its fleet immediately if any malfunctions occur.

Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean says there's been "inevitable delays" and the council is still working out the finer points of the trial.

"Wave's licence and the council and AT's expectations around its operation are consistent with the conditions applied to Lime, including adherence to the code of practice".

Wave was granted a licence in December 2018. Initially, we had three participants in the trial.

Wave is committed to providing a safe experience for its customers.

The Feb. 27 city council hearing came at a moment of national debate over e-scooters, which reach maximum speeds of 15 mph, cost a few dollars per ride, and can be parked anywhere not explicitly prohibited.

The World Series resumes in Hong Kong on April 5 for what is traditionally seen as the season's premier tournament. The Aussies put the issue beyond doubt with Henry Hutchison and John Porch scoring tries early in the second half.

Bolt said that the scooters will provide riders with access to a safe, equitable and eco-friendly transportation alternative.

Wave will also host pop-up events, run an ambassador programme, and run a "safe rider of the month" award for helmet use and safe riding, he said.

In an exclusive interview with the Herald, Lime co-founder and chief executive Toby Sun said he was open to the e-scooter tax - as long as it was earmarked for new and upgraded cycleways.

Wave has committed to voluntarily removing its fleet for any serious issue, until the issue is addressed.

Founder and managing director Albert Hoeft said his Brisbane-registered company planned to introduce the scooters in all "main metropolitan areas" in the country.

Conditions such as a speed limit in some or all areas, compulsory helmets or moving e-scooters from footpaths (where they're now legal) to cycleways (where they're now not) will require law changes at the national level.

Councillor Chris Darby, who heads Auckland Council's planning committee, has raised the idea of a per-ride levy for e-scooters, which could run to 5 cents.
