  • Students gather at Portland City Hall for a strike over a lack of action on climate change on Friday. Such groups worldwide are following the lead of a 16-year-old Swedish girl who skipped school for three weeks to protest in front of Sweden’s parliamen

"All schools are showing their support; we have been getting messages from everywhere - from Thornhill to the Tech - and there are even people travelling from Omagh to show their support".

We are grateful that in the first "Steering Committee Meeting on Climate Change" in 2016, the Chief Executive explicitly identified the need to "formulate and communicate long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies by 2020" and address the challenge as a "responsible member of the global community".

On Thursday, Thunberg was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize by Norwegian lawmakers for her efforts.

"Let's take action to raise awareness on Climate Change".

Campaigners said 15,000 people took part in protests in more than 60 towns and cities across the United Kingdom in February.

The movement is just one of dozens that will happen around the world, inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who has been holding weekly protests in front of Sweden's parliament since August 2018.

"As a doctor, I can say it makes a big difference whether you've got a fever of 41 degrees Celsius (105.8 Fahrenheit) or 43 C (109.4 F)", said Eckart von Hirschhausen, a German scientist who signed the call supporting striking students. Adults are more than welcome to join us.

"Future generations won't see the world we see today", he said.

Detained Saudi women activists appear in court
They may also have been meant as a message to activists not to push demands out of sync with the government's own agenda. Saudi Arabia's human rights record has been the subject of global criticism, and was rebuked by the U.N.

Movement organizers are also pushing for a national emergency declaration for climate change.

However, earlier this month City of Edinburgh Council said pupils could attend a planned rally outside the Scottish Parliament as long as they had permission of parents or carers.

"This is a great show of solidarity and great show of support for something that is going to be affecting us all, so I applaud you for that and keep up the work".

"Young people are deeply anxious and we want our voices heard".

Our futures are at stake.

UK youth strikes are being organised by a number of organisations including Youth Strike 4 Climate, UK Student Climate Network and the UK Youth Climate Coalition. Possibilities for renewable energies could include solar panels or biomass.

College and high school students in Boulder, Fort Collins and other cities across the country will step out of school for the strike.

"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", Norwegian Socialist Left MP Freddy Andre Ovstegard told AFP.
