United States stocks mostly higher on tech strength; Boeing hurts Dow

Stocks are moving steadily higher in midday trading on Wall Street, putting the market on track for its third gain in a row. Benchmarks in Shanghai, Tokyo, and Sydney all advanced.

Coca-Cola Co dipped 0.1 percent after HSBC downgraded the soda maker's stock.

After consolidating near the opening, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rebounded on the back of a 3.47 percent gain in Apple shares.

At 9:48 a.m. ET the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 34.54 points, or 0.13 percent, at 25,616.34, the S&P 500 was up 6.19 points, or 0.22 percent, at 2,789.49 and the Nasdaq Composite was up 7.06 points, or 0.09 percent, at 7,565.12.

The S&P 500 is up 48.45 points, or 1.8 per cent.

The modest gains Tuesday follow a rally on Monday that snapped a five-day losing streak.

Aircraft giant Boeing's shares dropped almost 12 percent shortly after markets opened Monday, a day after an Ethiopian Airlines jet crashed, killing all 157 people on board. Boeing has more than 5,000 orders outstanding for the 737 Max 8 aircraft, which is expected to be a large driver of business in the years ahead.

The index briefly pared gains in afternoon USA trading following news that British lawmakers crushingly rejected Prime Minister Theresa May's deal to quit the European Union.

Britain is due to pull out of the European Union in less than three weeks, on March 29, but Prime Minister Theresa May's government has not been able to win parliamentary approval for its agreement.

"The most recent economic data fits with our 2019 outlook that suggests economic growth is likely to slow this year, but recession prospects remain very low", he intones that "This reinforces the view that the Federal Reserve will continue with patience with regards to any future rate hikes until such time that underlying economic fundamentals show significant improvement". Fifth Third Bancorp rose 1.3 percent.

David Cheetham, chief market analyst at XTB, said it now "looks like any hopes of an unlikely victory for the PM's deal later have just been extinguished". Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1.5 percent to 28,821.14 and Seoul's Kospi gained 0.9 percent to 2,157.18.

April West Texas Intermediate crude rose 8 cents, or 0.1%, to settle at $56.87 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange on Tuesday after trading as high as $57.55.

The dollar strengthened to 111.29 Japanese yen from 111.21 yen on Monday.
