  • American Airlines to suspend flights to Venezuela

"Do not travel to Venezuela due to crime, civil unrest, and arbitrary arrest and detention of USA citizens", the State Department said in the level 4 warning.

An American Airlines airplane takes off from Heathrow airport in London July 3, 2014.

The decision came after the US State Department this week issued a "do not travel" advisory urging Americans to avoid the crisis-hit country "due to crime, civil unrest, poor health infrastructure, and arbitrary arrest and detention of US citizens".

A number of airlines have stopped their flights to the South American country because of security concerns and disputes over money they say the Venezuelan government owes them.

"American has temporarily suspended our operation into Caracas and Maracaibo", the carrier said in a statement.

On Thursday, the pilots' union for American Airlines told pilots to refuse to fly to the country, which is facing worldwide protests against President Nicolás Maduro and widespread power outages and inflation.

The move has put Venezuela at the heart of a geopolitical tussle, with the United States leading most Western nations in recognizing Guaido as the legitimate head of state. The U.S. pulled its last diplomats out of the country Thursday.

Shares of the airline were down nearly 1 percent at $31.88 in afternoon trading.

"Until further notice, if you are scheduled, assigned, or reassigned a pairing into Venezuela, refuse the assignment", it said.
