Auction of George Michael's art collection raises £11m

  • George Michael had amassed a collection of more than 200 works of art before his death in 2016

An auction of contemporary artworks owned by George Michael has raised $12.3 million for charity.

Around 100 more works were sold online from March 8-15, raising an additional amount which totalled more than £1 million.

"The Incomplete Truth", a 2006 work by Hirst consisting of a dove preserved in formaldehyde, sold for £911,250 - below its estimated price of £1.0-1.5 million.

Other lots sold on Thursday included three works by Michael Craig-Martin that reference Michael's 1998 notorious arrest for engaging in a sexual act in a public toilet.

The proceeds will go to charitable causes which the star supported before his death in December 2016, aged 53.

Jussi Pylkkänen, Global President of Christie's, and auctioneer for the night, said: "Tonight's sale was another great moment for the London art market and particularly for so many YBA artists". He said: "To realise such a significant sum is what we've all been working towards. We hope the charities who will ultimately benefit will be pleased with the outcome".

Michael was a keen collector of works by the Young British Art movement and developed friendships with numerous artists, visiting their galleries and studios.

In the lead-up to the auction key works from Michael's collection were shown in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai, before returning to London where the sale of catalogs and limited-edition tote bags raised a further £250,000 ($332,000) for Michael's philanthropic works. This was partly due to the autobiographical nature of so numerous works within it, but also because it revealed the extent to which he had supported his fellow British artists.

One of Hirst's works, Saint Sebastian, Exquisite Pain, was sold for £875,250.

Meanwhile, the touching piece George Loves Kenny by Tracey Emin was sold for £347,250. It was auctioned off for £791,250. Emin created the piece in 2007 for Michael and his then-partner Kenny Goss.
