  • Australian lawmaker blames mosque slaughter on 'increasing Muslim presence'

"Rather than demonstrating empathy and compassion, he has chosen instead to vent his racist prejudice and hatred against Islam and Muslims by blaming the victims instead of the criminal perpetrators", he said in a statement today.

In a written statement issued by his office, Senator Anning said that [the terrorist attack] highlighted the growing fear of "Muslim presence" within Australia and New Zealand.

This bigoted and unsafe point of view is one that Anning has been peddling for some time. In August, he called for a "final solution" to the Muslim "immigration problem", evoking a reference to the Nazis' "final solution" terminology used to target Jews during the Holocaust.

Obviously, the condemnation didn't deter him. Twitter has confirmed that an account matching the suspect's name has been deleted, and numerous media outlets report that the account had tweeted a white nationalist manifesto in the moments before the attack.

Australian senator Fraser Anning has blamed the terror attacks which claimed at least 49 lives at two mosques in Christchurch on Muslim immigrants.

Social Media Tries to Stop Spread of New Zealand Shooting Video
Forty people were killed in Friday's attack and four people were taken into custody, including one Australian. Hours after the attack, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison confirmed the attacker was an Australian.

Anning's statements echo messaging that the shooter himself says he was influenced by.

Morrison said that the views expressed by Senator Anning had "no place in Australia, let alone the Australian parliament".

The remarks were denounced by several people including the UK Home Secretary Sajid Javid, who accused the senator of stoking extremism.
