Christchurch shooting suspect appears in New Zealand court

The massacre by at least one gunman during Friday prayers in the city of Christchurch is the country's worst ever mass shooting and was condemned throughout Asia.

New Zealand's Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, said the gunman meant to continue his attack if he hadn't been stopped. He had no criminal history in New Zealand or Australia, and had not drawn the attention of the intelligence community for extremist views.

There are now four individuals who have been apprehended, but three are connected to this attack who are now in custody, one of which has publicly stated that they were Australian-born.

Ardern's office said the suspect had sent the "manifesto" in a bulk email that included a generic address for the prime minister, the opposition leader, speaker of the parliament and around 70 media outlets a matter of minutes before the attack. In New Zealand, commentators also anxious that the horror would sow deep divisions in a society that has largely avoided the polarizations that have spread elsewhere.

Mr Taylor, 27, left Aberdeen to travel to New Zealand as part of a trip to see more of the world.

Scrawled in English and several Eastern European languages were the names of numerous historical military figures - many of them Europeans involved in fighting the Ottoman forces in the 15th and 16th centuries.

"We are all so saddened by the awful tragedy in Christchurch, and out of respect, neither our players nor team management will comment further on the Plunket Shield championship until the completion of the final round".

"We understand the pain you're feeling at this moment, the loss you are feeling and we are here to ensure this community is respected and embraced and protected", the mayor said. This is a partial transcription of those press conferences in which she touches on her country's diversity, sending condolences to victims and their families and communities.

Ardern said 39 people remained in hospital, 11 of them in intensive care.

Meanwhile, the final day of the Auckland secondary schools dance festival Polyfest was cancelled following the attacks. SORROW, SYMPATHY Twelve operating theatres worked through the night on the more than 40 people wounded, said hospital authorities. "More importantly it was also about standing in solidarity in a small way to offer their love and support to the people of Christchurch".

NZC CEO David White said his organisation endorsed the process and the wishes of the players at such a traumatic time.
