We, with our global partners, stand with Ukraine in opposing Russia's ongoing efforts to undermine Ukrainian security, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

According to the US State Department, Washington's new set of restrictions have been introduced in coordination with the European Union and Canada.

"Today's action targets individuals and entities playing a role in Russia's unjustified attacks on Ukrainian naval vessels in the Kerch Strait, the purported annexation of Crimea, and backing of illegitimate separatist government elections in eastern Ukraine", the U.S. Treasury said in a March 15 statement.

Last November, the Russian navy captured 24 Ukrainian sailors and their vessels in the Kerch Strait, which links the Black and Azov seas.

Speaking in occupied Crimea, which he visited on the fifth anniversary of the occupation of the Ukrainian peninsula by Russia, he said "Ukraine treated Crimea very, very dishonestly, the fundamental rights of citizens were violated: the right to language, the right to education in their native language, the economy of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol was destroyed, in fact, it was the annexation", the press service of the lower house of the Russian parliament told UNIAN. "The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is announcing these sanctions on 114 individuals and 15 entities, under the Special Economic Measures Act".

"The measures now apply to a total of 170 persons and 44 entities", the Council of European Union pointed out. Russian Federation seized the Ukrainian vessels and detained 24 people on board after they failed to respond to demands to stop.

On 25 November, Ukraine's Berdyansk and Nikopol gunboats and the Yany Kapu tugboat illegally crossed the Russian maritime border as they sailed toward the Kerch Strait, the entrance to the Sea of Azov. We will continue to take necessary action together in response to Russia's efforts to destabilise Ukraine.

The six defence firms were targeted over their operations in Crimea, where the USA says several "misappropriated Ukrainian state assets to provide services to the Russian military".

Among them are Russian shipbuilding giant Zelenodolsk, the hydroacoustic equipment producer Okeanpribor, a diesel engine supplier to the Russian military, Zvezda, and an electronic parts supplier to the military, Fiolent.

The billionaire was slapped with sanctions in April previous year, which targeted tycoons with close ties to the Kremlin.
