  • The Christchurch gunman who live streamed the shooting on Facebook promoted Youtube star PewDiePie in his video

As news of the tragedy broke, video also surfaced on social media of a gunman opening fire inside one of the mosques. Two explosive devices attached to suspects' vehicles have now been found and they have been disarmed.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed two of the 40 people being treated at Christchurch Hospital were in a critical condition - a five-year-old had also been taken to Starship Hospital at Auckland.

The suspect who claimed responsibility for the shootings left a 74-page anti-immigrant manifesto in which he explained who he was and his reasoning for the attack.

"At first, we hide behind the cars and you know under the auto, then when we see the the fighting [shooting] is still on we try to jump the fence".

Naeem Rashid tried to overpower Brenton Tarrant and protect fellow worshippers at Al Noor Mosque but was shot as he did so. Some pointed to the fact he did name Coptic Christians and call out anti-Semitism in previous tweets when killers attacked Egyptian churches in 2017 and a synagogue in Pittsburgh last fall.

A 17-minute video appeared online, taken from a helmet camera showed a shooter in his auto, arming himself, getting out of the vehicle and entering the mosque where he started shooting.

A lockdown on all schools in Christchurch has been lifted, but the city remains on high alert.

The New Zealand prime minister went on to say she had instructed the government bodies to 'report to Cabinet on Monday on these events with a view to strengthening our systems on a range of fronts including, but not limited to, firearms, border controls, enhanced information-sharing with Australia, and any practice reinforcement of our watch list processes'. That was almost 30 years ago and was the deadliest shooting in New Zealand's history, until Friday. "The horrific active shooter scenario at a mosque is something we all pray never happens (but) there is no active intelligence that there is any immediate threat in the U.S. But we can not be complacent".

New Zealand gun laws to change: Ardern
Ranstorp said Tarrant's document is shorter and "more sloppy" than the one written by the Breivik, who killed 77 people in 2011. The police commissioner would not confirm the shooter's name is Brenton Tarrant during the press conference .

'As soon as new Zealanders hear that someone was able to legally acquire, as I'm advised, those weapons and carry out this event, that will raise enormous questions with our gun-laws and that is why we will respond swiftly'.

A witness described the sound of gunfire breaking out just as the prayer leader began his sermon at a mosque.

Dozens of people laid flowers at cordons near both mosques in Christchurch, which is still rebuilding after a devastating quake in 2011 that killed nearly 200 people.

Prosecutors in Bulgaria launched a probe into a recent visit to the country by the terrorist behind the attack.

He visited Bulgaria from November 9-15 a year ago claiming he wanted "to visit historical sites and study the history of the Balkan country", Bulgaria's public prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov said, adding that the inquiry would establish if this was "correct or if he had other objectives".

CNN cites a 2015 study that reported New Zealand had an adjusted rate of about 1 gun death per 100,000 people, while in 2017, the United States has an adjusted rate of 12 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

Christchurch was the home of these victims.

Christchurch, a relatively small city on New Zealand's south island, hit global headlines in 2011 when it was struck by a deadly quake, killing more than 180 people.
