While community gardai said they would be attending Friday prayer in local mosques to "make themselves available" to the Muslim community.

"Strongly condemning" the terror attack on the mosques in New Zealand, Prime Minister Khan tweeted: "This reaffirms what we have always maintained: that terrorism does not have a religion".

In a message to the Governor-General of New Zealand, the Queen said: "I have been deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch today".

He added: "At this point we are not actively looking for any identified persons".

The deaths occurred at Al Noor mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre, police said. The response from some Muslim countries went further, blaming politicians and the media for stoking that hatred.

World leaders expressed condolences and condemnation Friday following the deadly attacks on mosques in New Zealand, while Muslim leaders said the mass shooting was evidence of a rising tide of violent Islamophobia.

The Christchurch Irish Society said it was the "darkest of days" for the area.

"I am not going to let this change New Zealand's profile, none of us should".

Most of those who were at the mosques at the time of the shooting were migrants and refugees.

"I would never have expected anything like this to happen in Christchurch, I'd never expect this to happen in New Zealand", Dalziel said, as quoted by the Stuff news outlet.

Basu said British counter-terror officers were ready to support their colleagues in New Zealand in responding to and investigating Friday's attack.

According to media reports, the attacker also live streamed one of the shootings, and the police promptly urged users not to share the link to the video.

"We work closely with partners in the Muslim community and local authorities, including Cambridgeshire County Council, and will continue to do so".

The gun Brenton Tarrant used to carry out the attack.

Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg said the attack sparked memories of the 2011 massacre of 77 people by extremist Anders Breivik at a left-wing youth gathering on a Norwegian island and with a bomb in Oslo.

"I can confirm that the individual who was taken into custody... is an Australian-born citizen", Morrison said at a press conference, aired at Periscope.

New Zealand police have arrested three people in connection with the attacks including one man who has been charged with murder.

"London stands with the people of Christchurch in the face of this horrific terror attack", he said. "But we can not assume there are no others at large", Commissioner Mike Bush told reporters.

While British YouTube personality KSI furiously vented: "Just makes me sad that someone with such a sick and twisted agenda would want to cause so much harm to people he doesn't even know". All Christchurch schools have been shut. The police said there were also multiple improvised explosive devices attached to vehicles as part of the attack.

"Far too often, Muslims suffer unimaginable loss and pain in the places where they should feel safest", Trudeau said in a statement.

In a 74-page manifesto "The Great Replacement", believed to have been written by Tarrant, he says his motives include to "create an atmosphere of fear" and to "incite violence" against Muslims.

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern confirmed that a total of 49 people have been killed and at least 20 others had been seriously injured.
