His nervousness against the 20-time Grand Slam champion was evident and despite the second set being a closer affair, it was the Swiss superstar who booked his place in a 13th Indian Wells quarter-final.

Following both their victories, the two champions now increased their odds to face each other in the semifinals to fill fans with excitement.

Nadal, meanwhile, himself a 17-time Grand Slam champion and the current world number four, beat Serbia's Filip Krajinovic 6-3, 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes. "It's one of these victories today I'm really proud of", Nadal told reporters, declining to absolutely guarantee that he would be okay to play on Saturday.

The fourth-seeded Federer has played five fewer sets than Hurkacz, who earned three-set upsets of No. 28 seed Lucas Pouille, No. 6 seed Kei Nishikori and No. 24 seed Denis Shapovalov.

Both the Spaniard and Federer have looked in supreme form since the start of the tournament, with both players yet to drop a set. "They warned me they were going to put me on at 11.00 (a.m.)".

After cruising to a 6-1 6-4 win over the 22nd seed Kyle Edmund, Federer thanked Laver - and fellow great Pete Sampras - for watching along at the Californian tournament.

He will next face Karen Khachanov, who got the better of John Isner 6-4 7-6 (7-1).

"The previous days here in Indian Wells helped me a lot to get back to my top level physically and also to play good tennis again", Thiem said. Although he'll be an overwhelming favorite against Hurkacz, Federer said he wouldn't take a semi-final meeting with Nadal for granted.

Kecmanovic became the first lucky loser to reach the quarter-finals since the tournament achieved Masters 1000 status in 1990.

Nishioka retired after losing the first set 6-4, having first sought treatment on court.

Kecmanovic is the last teen left in the men's draw, after the departure of 19-year-old Shapovalov.

Thiem needed less than an hour to subdue the 89th-ranked Karlovic, surrendering just seven points on his own serve and punishing Karlovic's second serve.

"I think that's also one of the reasons I'm still in the game", Federer said when asked about playing Nadal.

Seeking a record sixth title at Indian Wells, Federer beat Kyle Edmund 6-1, 6-4 in 64 minutes in front of former greats Pete Sampras and Rod Laver.
