  • Brenton Tarrant appeared in court charged with the murder of 49 people

Brenton Tarrant, in white prison suit, barefooted, handcuffed and flanked by two armed police officers, made a brief appearance in the court for about five minutes.

Judge Paul Kellar allowed journalists to use cameras and shoot video but said Tarrant's face must be obscured in order to protect his right to a fair trial.

Tarrant has been identified as a suspected white supremacist, based on his social media activity. He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance which is scheduled for April 5.

Many people were killed in a mass shooting at a mosque in the New Zealand city of Christchurch on Friday, a witness said.

49 people have been confirmed dead and more than 20 are injured following attacks at two mosques.

Yet many observers - including people of colour, and immigrant and religious minority communities in the West - needed no official designation of the barbaric event to recognise it as an act of terror.

"Maybe it's not really the first incident that's happened with violence in mosques but it's the first of its kind with that large number of victims that were actually killed in that heinous attack".

A Jordanian man, who did not want to be named, said he moved to New Zealand seven years ago because it was a safe place to raise his children.

Mr Bainimarama also said his government will be working closely with authorities in New Zealand to monitor the welfare of Fijians in Christchurch.

Muath said his brother helped establish the mosque a year after arriving in New Zealand, where he teaches engineering at a university and runs a consultancy.

Mohammed Elyan, a Jordanian in his 60s who co-founded one of the mosques in 1993, was among those wounded, as was his son, Atta, who is in his 30s.

The manifesto also included a single reference to US President Donald Trump in which the author asked and answered the question of whether he was a Trump supporter: "As a symbol of renewed white identity and common goal?"

US President Donald Trump, who condemned the attack as a "horrible massacre", was praised by the accused gunman in a manifesto posted online as "a symbol of renewed white identity and common purpose".

Peneha, who lives next door, said the gunman ran out of the mosque, dropped what appeared to be a semi-automatic weapon in his driveway and fled. On Saturday morning, dozens of people stood silently, facing the building as police went about their work. He walked back into the mosque, where there were at least two dozen people lying on the ground.

"We still love this country", said Me Ibrahim Abdul Halim, the imam of Linwood Mosque, vowing that extremists would "never ever touch our confidence".

But once passed, the licence holder can buy as many weapons as they please.

After going back outside and shooting a woman there, he gets back in his vehicle, where a song can be heard blasting. The singer bellows, "I am the god of hellfire!" and the gunman drives away.

According to gunpolicy.org, in 2017, the estimated rate of both registered and illicit private gun ownership in New Zealand per 100 people is 33.26. We have seen too many instances of vicious attacks in mosques, synagogues, temples, churches and other houses of worship, and it is time to say, "No More!", reads the statement.
