  • Leo Varadkar listens as Donald Trump holds court in the Oval Office

President Trump recently talked Brexit and trade relations with the prime minister of Ireland, while hosting the leader at the White House.

"This has been a tradition where we dispense from our differences, whether it is political or whether they are competitive in any other way, and where we come together and celebrate", she said.

"I's a shame it has to be that way but I think we will stay right in our lane, ' said Mr Trump, who claimed 'I'm not sure anybody knows" what is happening.

While speaking to the press, Trump mentioned his property in Doonbeg, Clare and said that he plans on visiting Ireland.

He said he once lived in a country where if he had been himself he would have been breaking laws and now that has all changed.

In an unhelpful intervention for the United Kingdom prime minister, the president said Theresa May had ignored his advice on how to better handle negotiations.

The US president initially supported Brexit, saying that Britain would be "better off" outside the European Union, particularly due to gaining freedom from the EU's immigration policy.

The event saw Varadkar present President Trump with the traditional bowl of shamrock as part of an annual ceremony that dates all the way back to the 1950s.

Trump added: "I'm surprised at how badly it's all gone from the standpoint of a negotiation".

"They were very well briefed", Varadkar said of his meeting with Pence and his wife.

At the Capitol Hill lunch hosted by Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, Mr Varadkar avoided remarks similar to his infamous windfarm gaffe previous year. I can tell you it's a very complex thing that's going on now.

However, some differences between the two nations' administrations were highlighted on Thursday morning (March 14), when Varadkar arrived at the Naval Observatory for a breakfast meeting with Vice-President Mike Pence - and took along his partner, Matt Barrett.

Mrs Foster, who is in Washington for St Patrick's Day, invited Mr Trump to The Open at Royal Portrush in July as she attended a lunch on Capitol Hill addressed by the President. "I hate to see it being - everything being ripped apart right now", Trump said, adding that holding a second referendum "would be very unfair to the people that won".

Mr Varadkar said: "The Irish people have always had a dialogue with the American people".

"But it will all work out, everything does, one way or the other".
