  • Mass shootings at New Zealand mosques kill 49; 1 man charged

Mike Bush the Police Commissioner said that it is possible that there are more people involved in the2 coordinated terrorist attacks.

Bush told a news conference that a man has been charged with murder and will appear in court tomorrow.

The shooter, Australian man Brenton Tarrant, 28, told his Facebook Live stream viewers just before opening fire on two mosques, to 'subscribe to PewDiePie'.

The man who claimed responsibility for the shooting said: "he came to New Zealand only to plan and train for the attack".

Two IEDs (improvised explosive devices) were also found and neutralised by the military, police said.

The government of New Zealand is treating the incident as a terrorist attack.

YouTube content star PewDiePie has issued a response to having his name attached to the New Zealand mosque massacre, saying he was "sickened" by any connection to the incident.

Christchurch, a relatively small city in the south of New Zealand, hit global headlines in 2011 when it was struck by a deadly quake.

A Palestinian man who was in one of the mosques said he saw someone being shot in the head.

New Zealand Terror Attack
The response from some Muslim countries went further, blaming politicians and the media for stoking that hatred. The deaths occurred at Al Noor mosque and the Linwood Islamic Centre, police said.

"It's a big mosque and there were more than 200 people inside".

In the video, the killer spends more than two minutes inside the mosque spraying terrified worshippers with gunfire. He said one was slightly injured.

- Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said one of those arrested was an Australian citizen and described the suspected attacker as an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist". Shortly before the attack, one of the suspects reportedly posted to social media an 87-page manifesto that was littered with Islamophobic comments and explanations for why the attack was about to occur.

"They have absolutely no place in New Zealand and, in fact, no place in the world", Ardern said.

One man, with blood still on his shirt, said in a television interview that he hid from the gunman under a bench and prayed that he would run out of bullets.

"If your child was attending the climate change protest in Cathedral Square and you want to check if they are in the Civic Offices, please call the Council Contact Centre on 03-941-8999", Christchurch City Council said. On Saturday, people across the country were reaching out to Muslims in their communities on social media to volunteer acts of kindness - offering rides to the grocery store or volunteering to walk with them if they felt unsafe.

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has relatively loose gun laws and an estimated 1.5 million firearms, or roughly one for every three people.

The gunman then walks back into the mosque, where there are at least two dozen people lying on the ground.

"That (earthquake) brought all the skyscraper buildings down and this is one of the reasons why people are fearful, I feel", he told CNN.
