New Zealand set to ban semi-automatic weapons

Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, head of Counter Terrorism Policing, said on Friday: "Whilst there is no intelligence linking these appalling events in Christchurch to the United Kingdom, additional uniform patrols will continue in London and nationally over the coming days, focusing on places of worship and specific communities".

"There have been attempts to change our laws in 2005, 2012 and after an inquiry in 2017".

The main suspect in a mass shooting in at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand that left 49 people dead appeared in court Saturday.

Numerous victims hailed from around the world. At least two Jordanian citizens were killed and five others wounded in the shootings, the country's Foreign Ministry said.

Cook Islands prime minister Herny Puna said his country's prayers first and foremost were with the victims of the shooting, "their families, friends and loved ones whe are now faced with the irreconcilable loss of their loved ones". "As is the entire nation, we are all unified in grieving together", she told reporters.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison described the suspect as an "extremist right-wing violent terrorist".

The suspected shooter has been identified as Brenton Tarrant, 28, of Australia. Tarrant's family is from the northern New South Wales town of Grafton and New South Wales state Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says his officers are investigating to help New Zealand police. "We are working to have any footage removed", New Zealand police said.

None of those arrested had a criminal history or was on any watchlist in New Zealand or Australia.

Four people died en route to hospital. The other two remain in custody but their role in the shootings remains unclear.

"I have been deeply saddened by the appalling events in Christchurch today", she said. A woman apprehended at the scene was released without charge.
