  • Intel Is Working to Build an Exascale Supercomputer

To maintain its lead in supercomputing, the United States has budgeted over $500 million to build the first "exascale" computer in the world in 2021.

The new system, dubbed Aurora, will be capable of completing at least one exaflop, or a billion billion calculations per second. The contract for the exascale computer is valued at more than $500 million. The Aurora system will allow Intel to claim temporary bragging rights over IBM's Power processor, which now runs the two most powerful supercomputers on the Top 500 list. However, the new system will use components created by Intel's 3D packaging technology, which can produce leaner, more power-efficient chips.

Aurora was featured in a New York Times story a few hours ago, which quoted Raja Koduri (SVP of Intel's core and visual computing group) as proclaiming "We want to make exascale computing available to everyone". Several countries are in a race to claim they have the fastest computer in the world. And reportedly, the Chinese government has been prototyping an exascale computer, which could end up online in 2020.

Intel and Cray are expected to deliver Aurora to the DOE, at a cost of approx $500 million, sometime during 2021.

Supercomputers are the workhorses of modeling and simulations, using massive amounts of data and mathematical formulas, or algorithms, to test and develop everything from new materials used in solar-energy cells or batteries to processes used in next-generation nuclear power plants.

"Achieving Exascale is imperative not only to better the scientific community, but also to better the lives of everyday Americans", said US Secretary of Energy Rick Perry in a statement.
