RACQ spokesperson Lucinda Ross said TC Trevor was now east of Cape York and modelling suggested it could intensify to a category four system when it landed by Tuesday evening.

Northern coastal waters are expected to experience gales from today, with a warning current for gales from Orford Ness to Cape Flattery, including Coen and Lockhart River.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center or JTWC posted at 5 a.m. EDT (0900 UTC) on March 18 that Trevor was located at 12.3 degrees south latitude and 145.0 degrees east longitude.

"We're going to see large falls right up to next Friday with chances of flash flooding", Jess Gardner from the Bureau of Meteorology said. That's approximately 280 nautical miles north of Cairns, Australia.

"In Cairns, rain, showers and storms will be heavy at times this week, with a weekly total most likely between 200-400mm", he said.

Dr Adam Morgan, BOM meteorologist, warned: "Trevor is then forecast to re-intensify quickly in the Gulf later this week".

Possible heavy rain from Tropical Cyclone Trevor could combine with the king tides to increase the risk of flooding in low-lying areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the cyclone will generate damaging winds, heavy rainfall and abnormally high tides as it crosses the coast.

E ARLIER: Cyclone Trevor has formed in the northern Coral Sea.

GALES may develop along the northwestern Peninsula coast between Cape York and Mapoon during Wednesday if Trevor remains a tropical cyclone and takes a more northerly track than forecast. These GALES are expected to extend inland over the Peninsula tonight and on Wednesday as the cyclone moves inland.

Heavy rainfall is also expected across the north.

A cyclone warning zone is in place for Orford Ness to Cape Melville, including Lockhart River and Coen.

People elsewhere between the Torres Strait Islands and Cape Tribulation, including Cooktown should consider what action they will need to take if the cyclone threat increases.

The regional harbour master has issued a Yellow Alert for the ports of Weipa and Amrun, with vessel operators urged to take all necessary precautions.
