  • A serious global health threat:’ drug-resistant fungus sickens hundreds in U.S

Candida auris, a yeast infection with a 1/3 mortality rate if the infection reaches either the blood, heart or brain, was first discovered in Japan in 2009 and presents a "serious global health threat", the CDC said.

Clinics, hospital and healthcare workers who suspect being exposed to C. auris are advised to immediately report the case to the CDC and clean rooms with a strong disinfectant. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, infections from C. auris can be fatal.

While CDC was busy in examining those 77 cases, they found out 45 more with the same problem.

The CDC says there have been three confirmed cases of C. auris, which is commonly known as a drug resistant "superbug", in Maryland and one case in Virginia.

As concerns have heightened at hospitals and other healthcare facilities around the country about a drug-resistant strain of fungus, CT health officials say they've not documented any new cases in the state. Between 30% and 60% of patients die from the infection. People having weaker immune systems are more prone to Candida Auris. Well, it's a type of yeast that can enter a person's bloodstream.

An emerging multidrug-resistant fungus called Candida auris (C. auris) is causing healthcare-associated infections around the world, including the United States and IL.

Question: Can anyone get this fungus and how is it spread? It can linger on medical equipment and surfaces.

Candida auris has caused many outbreaks in healthcare settings. It can also be carried on a person's body.

In an interview with The New York Times, fungal branch head Tom Chiller referred to C. auris as the "creature from the black lagoon" because nobody knows where it came from and it continues to spread globally. But there are risk factors to be aware of, which include recent surgery, antifungal and broad-spectrum antibiotic use, and diabetes.

At least 56,000 people in the USA and European Union die every year as a direct outcome of infection from antibiotic-resistant bacteria, comparable to influenza, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS combined. Also, those who have visited nursing homes and are connected to breathing tubes, feeding tubes and other medical devices are at the highest risk of contracting the infection, the CDCP said.

Healthy people usually do not get this infection and symptoms are hard to detect because people with the infection are often already sick in the hospital with another serious illness, according to the CDC.
